“I don’t need a friend who changes when I change and who nods when I nod; my shadow does that much better” – Plutarch (who also disputed Heraclitus’ example of the river which is made up of ever-changing water flowing in, and thus remains the same river, while Plutarch says it is impossible to step twice into the same river because “…it scatters and again comes together, and approaches and recedes”.**)
**My college philosophy professor said I would need to know that someday. Apparently, he was right. Took long enough…
Plutarch Who? Happy to have obliged. But I’m sticking with Heraclitus about the river. He said it was impossible for the same man to step into the same river twice. Both the man and the river will be different, which goes to his point about change. (The man older and the river water different from what was there before.) Heraclitus also said, “The chains of marriage are so heavy it takes two to lift them … sometimes three.”
Words to live by. And when we resist change, it just gets harder. Thanks for sharing, Andrew!

And what is the one thing that humans really don’t like? Change! You’d think we’d learn.
